Our most popular kit provides enough product to clean and then brighten a 30×20 deck with rails and 5 steps (1200-1600 total sq.feet). For a fence this package will clean and then brighten both sides of 90 feet of fence.
You will receive 2 containers of RAD Step 1 Wood Cleaner and 2 containers of RAD Step 2 Wood Brightener.
Leftover product can be used to clean concrete, house siding, lawn furniture and awnings. (Do not use over grass, clean furniture on a hard surface)
A certified wood contractor would charge about $500 to perform this service for you. Similar products like Cabot’s Problem Solver stripper and brightener would cost $200.
Restore-a-Deck Step 1 is a wood cleaner and preps stains for reapplication of a stain. It is not a stain stripper or remover of old stains. Please see Restore-A-Deck Stripper if you are trying to remove a semi-transparent stain.
I have an ipe deck that has never been treated.
Last year I used prep and brighter but the results were a bit variable. Some spots came out better. Not sure what I did wrong.
Now I’d like to clean/brighten and stain with the RAD semitransparent stain. But I want to avoid uneven cleaning.
What do you think I did wrong?
Advice welcome and thank you.
Post pics for prep help.
I stained my deck using RAD semi transparent dark walnut in 2020. The boards along the edge are more exposed to moisture so are looking cracked and worn. I think I may need to sand them. Do I need to strip the RAD stain or can I just clean, sand, brighten, stain?
Post some pics.
I don’t see the icon for attaching pics here…? 😕
In the bottom right corner is a paperclip.
Weird the clip only shows up if I’m not logged in… One pic shows the boards that are more protected and still look great. The other shows the ones on the edge that are more exposed.
Strip and brighten so it is all uniform when done.
Ok, thank you!
Hello! Would Restore-A-Deck cleaner and brightener be safe to use on a mahogany deck? The deck has been previously coated with an oil based product. I plan on using another oil based product after cleaning. It has been about 7 years since last done and is very dirty.
Yes, but you should strip and brighten since you have an old coating.
Hi, I stripped, brightened and twice stained (semi transparent) my hardwood pool deck back in april 20. It’s now showing serious barren spots. Is that normal? Furthermore: how to go about a new coat/ coats? Cleaning, brightening and staining? Or just cleaning and staining? Thanks. (Living in the caribbean, by the way)
Exotic hardwoods can only have one coat of stain and they also need to be cleaned and recoated annually. Sound like you may have over-applied. Prep to remove and then just one coat.
Thanks for the feedback. Does this mean i have to strip and stain (once)? Or will cleaning and staining (once) suffice? In both cases: is brightening necessary or advisable?
Strip and brighten this time. Apply one coat. In the future, you can clean and brighten for prep.
I stripped, brightened, rinsed and applied one coat on a damp deck. It turned out very spotty – see photos. Any idea what went wrong and what do you recommend me to do?
You did not rinse the Brightener completely out of the wood and it reacted with the stain. Here is a good article on why this can happen: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/why-rinse-a-wood-brightener-with-water/
I have a 2 year old pressure treated deck would the cleaner and brightner help to restore the natural color and grain
Yes, correct.
Also, what do I do if it rains before my RAD stain is dry? I live in the Northwest and weather can be unpredictable.
It cannot rain on the RAD stain if it has not dried. It will ruin the finish. No rain for at least 4 hours after applying.
Once mixed with water, what are the shelf lives of the cleaner and brightener products? Want to test, and then use a few months or so later.
The cleaner has a shelf life of 3-6 hours once mixed. The Brightener does not have a shelf life.
Thank you…
Can I use the cleaner and brightener products if I have a well?
Yes.
The description states “Leftover product can be used to clean concrete, house siding, lawn furniture and awnings”. Is that referring to the cleaner, brightener, or using the 2 step process?
Just the cleaner.

After the wait and prep, try the Armstrong Clark.

You can use this for new cedar, but new wood needs to weather for about 3 months after install, before prep and staining.

Just the cleaner is okay but you can do the brightener.
