Does this fill in cracks and splinters?
It will not fill large cracks. No solid deck stain will fill cracks.
I have Restore-A-Deck Semi Transparent stain on the deck now can I use the Solid stain over it without stripping?
Yes, but you do need to prep by cleaning and removing any loose stains.
Hello…would I be able to apply Restore-A-Deck directly over my deck which previously had a solid stain on it, much of which peeled off when cleaning?
It would be best to prep by removing all loose or peeling stain first. You can only apply over the old solid stain that is fully intact and not peeling.
Why is the solid stain almost $20 more a gallon and why isn’t it offered in a 5 gallon option to save money?
Solid stains have a much different resin and a lot more pigment so it is normal to cost more than semi-transparent colors. We do not offer them in 5-gallon due to the way the pigment settles. Much easier in the single gallons to use and mix.
The solid espresso in full sun. Is it more light brown or light gray? Kinda hard to distinguish from the website pic. Any feedback from customers
The espresso is brown, not gray. There are photos of all colors on this link:

Thanks. Wasn’t sure. If I strip with both additives can I skip the power washer if I’m applying the solid espresso? Thought maybe since the espresso is dark could get away without using a pressure washer. Removing a dark semitransparent transparent/solid water base stain from a fence.
No, you have to pressure wash no natter what.
Ok. I will. Going to buy a pressure washer. Ideally I’d like to get one with 800psi max. I don’t want to screw up this part of the prep and damage the wood. Can you please give advise for a unit, nozzle degree and psi unit. Really appreciate your help
800 is going to be useless. 2400 PSI washer is best with 2-3 GPM. It does not matter the brand. Wash with the white or green nozzle.
Thought with a 800psi I could have the nozzle right next to the wood and lessen damaging the wood. Hmmm
That is wrong and not how pressure washers work. PSI is only at the tip. No one washes right at the tip but 8-12 inches away. When you are that far away, the pressure drops roughly in half.
Thanks. Ok. While I’m waiting for my prep supplies from you guys to arrive I’ll try and find a 2-3gpm “affordable” electric power washer get the right nozzle and stay back 8-12in. Any suggestions please share
Gas, not electric.
Appreciate your help. It’ll have to be electric. I’ll do some shopping. Great info here. I’ll make sure i use the right nozzle, stay back 8-12 and settle for atleast a 2gpm unit if possible. Thanks
i have a corner lot. there’s a few long sections. what would your strategy be on a 50ft section fence does have some lattice at the top in some sections. one side is facing a busy street. can i say tape off or section off and do a 10-20 foot section at a time. using a brush and will use a roller and back brush if that’ll make it faster. feel like if attempt it this way maybe issue with stripper/brightner running into the section i previously stained. leaning on using solid espresso if that makes a difference.
You have to strip and brighen all the fence until done before applying any stain.
after the brightening step how much time/days do i have to apply the stain? do i have a week or two? thought i’d do it in smaller sections and put two coats on before i proceed to another section but guess i cant do it that way. so how long after i do the strip and brighten the entire 50ft section do i have to apply the first coat of stain? and how about time after the first coat of stain to apply the second? do i have up until a week or two in between both?
Stain within two weeks of prep. The solid stain and the semi transparent stains have different applications. You can read each and when to apply the second coat on the labels and product pages in the technical info tab.
I have a 2 year old white cedar deck, I was told to let it cure for 6 months then clean it with RAD which I did but was not able to get all the oxidized white out. I did stain it but plan on stripping it and staining it a little darker. Will your stripper remove the oxidized white? Should I use the booster?
Stripper and pressure washing will remove the old stain and any oxidation. Brightener after. No need for booster.
Will the solid stain peel and how long before I will need to re do?
it is not prone to peeling but it can wear. Recoating every 2-3 years on a deck floor is normal. Railings will last 3-6 years.
I’d like to seal a 15 year old screened in porch that was made from cedar. We would like to keep the appearance as nature as possible with no glossy sheen. I’ve been using OxiClean and brush to get the old stain (about 10 years old) and mildew off. Do all Restore-a Deck sealers have stain? What do you suggest to keep the natural cedar appearance?
All RAD Stains seal as well. You must have a tinted color to prevent UV graying. Natural color is the lightest tint.
Can you tell me if this board has residual stain, or is it the grain of the cedar?
That is the wood grain.
I am planning on painting the deck vertical rails with a solid “stain” and using an oil base or sealant stain of some sort for the vertical deck. What do you suggest? This deck is killing me. I am too old for this. I would like a stain that is easy to upkeep from year to year. I live in rainy Oregon. I am going to try and protect my deck from the rain as much as possible, but it will get wet from time to time.
You want a two-toned deck. See this: https://www.restore-a-deck.com/Deck-Cleaning-Reviews-and-Tips/two-toned-decks-with-restore-a-deck-wood-stains.html
Hi,
I have a north facing covered porch with new PT decking.
After waiting the suggested the one year to allow drying would you recommend the solid stain for the decking?
thanks
3+ months and then prep. One year is not needed. You can then use the solid stain or semi transparent.
If I am using RAD Solid Stain on a pressure treated deck that has never been stained (about 8 years old), what is the purpose of the RAD brightener if I’m covering it up with a solid stain. Thanks
You need to use the cleaner first and then Brightener after to neutralize.
So bummed that you don’t have a reddish color in the solid stain! I thought I found a great solution for our old deck…but I need a brick red color, since that’s what is already on it. Any chance other colors will be added anytime soon? 🙁
Sorry but no. You do not have to stick with the same color as prior. Any color of the RAD will work as it will cover your old stain.
Good to know – I like the red, though. Thanks, anyway!
How long can we store solid stain once opened, and at what min/max temperature?
12 months is the shelf life once opened. Has to be room temperature.
Will RAD Solid Stain cover wood filler?
Yes.
Can you paint a RAD Solid Stain over a hardwood like IPE?
You should not use a solid stain on IPE. It will have a hard time penetrating into the very dense wood.
I am a painting contractor and would like to get the full range of solid color samples. Is there a discount to purchase all the samples. I put the samples on wood to sell jobs to my customers.

For stripping rail spindles, can you brush on the stripper or should you spray the stripper? For the solid stain, can you do one coat one day and second coat another day?
Spray on stripper and then pressure wash off. Best to do the RAD Solid Stain second coat the same day if possible but next day is okay.
I power washed my existing 30 year old deck that we replaced some boards last summer. So we are going to use the solid stain since the new and old will never match. I bought the restore a deck package. I will let dry after completing those two and then apply the solid stain. Can I apply one coat one day and a second coat a day or so later? Deck is 32×16 I’ll never get one coat on spindles/railing and deck all in one day. Or should I do it in sections to get two coats on in the same day? Thanks!
Best to do both coats in same day.
How much time in between each coat of solid stain is best?
As soon as the first coat is dry. 1-3 hours.
Does it matter what temperature I apply the solid stain. Going to be in the 60-70’s during the day next week which is when I’d like to apply but at night it gets down to 35-45. Is that ok?
Yes, that is okay.
If deck is properly stripped and Brightened, how long would stain last? I’m working on a deck I restored about 4 years ago and used Behr semi transparent stain… big mistake. Areas started to peel noticeably after 2 years. I’d like some peace of mind knowing I’m providing the client with a good product that will look good for years to come.
Every 2-3 years is normal for a deck.
Could you mix white and gray stain to make a light gray?
Yes, you can do this.
I want to just stain my new mailbox post (6″x6″ x6′) – how much stain (ounces) is in your samples? Is one sample enough to cover this size of post?
Thanks
Samples are only about 1-2 oz and will not cover a post.
I have SW Deckscapes solid color stain on my south facing and west facing pressure treated porch floor which has been pealing and cracking. See attached picture. After reading the reviews I want to use RAD Coastal Gray solid color stain. Will power washing be sufficient before applying RAD, or do I need further steps?
Strip off what you can of the solid stain. Let dry and sand any peeling stain. You can then cover the intact stain that is not peeling with the RAD Solid Stains.
Thanks for the quick reply.
Is the coastal grey a warm or a cool grey? Ie is there blue undertones? Thx!
Warm mostly. Not blue.
need to restore our deck. Per the picture, we haven’t stained for about 10 yrs or so. It is 30 year old pressure treated wood. It has been previously power washed. Should i use the RAD Stripper since the rail spindles may have some stain left on them or can i do everything with the RAD Cleaner?
Also, I plan on doing two-toned. Would you be able to tell me how much Classic White I would need for 110 spindles- 30″x1 1/2″?
thank you so much
Strip and brighten all wood for prep. Probably 2 gallons for the rails.
Do you have a package that consist of Stripper , Brightener, Solid stain? Do you need 2 coats of hte solid stain?
Clarification- Do you need 2 coats of the solid stain on the deck? If so, can you walk on the first coat before it is completely dry to add the second coat?
2 coats. The second has to be applied after the first coat is fully dry. We do not have packages with the Solid Stain.
I need to re-stain a fence 6ft high x 8ft long ( 35 sections of 8 ft) so aprox 280ft and both sides need to be done so aprox 560 linear feet in total. I am looking to purchase the Espresso Stain. Is this the correct stain for this re-stain? Also what qty would I require if I intend to spray this fence on both sides?
As well do i need to just pressure wash before or use another product for preparing?
You have over 3000 sq feet. You can use the Espresso stain. Only one coat is needed. About 15 Gallons. As for the prep, that would depend on the current condition? Pictures would help.
Can you paint a solid stain over an oil-based stain already down and dried? I really don’t like how it turned out at all.
As long as prep with the Stripper and Brightener Kit.
I bought five different solid stain samples. Can the cost of all (or any) of those be credited towards my final purchase of stain?
Sorry but no.
Is the class is white solid stain bright white or slightly off-white? Thanks!
Slightly off white.
Does it require 2 coats of properly prepped exterior wood deck surfaces?
Yes.
Cypress solid?
Strip and brighten the back deck for prep. Any color that you like will work. Color preference is your choice.
