Have a 25 year old deck, 2 levels – one full sun, one mostly shade but some sun. It had been regularly treated with Pittsburg Paint oil acrylic stains, but last finish was terrible. We have power washed twice, rented a floor sander and orbital sander, used Wolman deck cleaner, but there is still some stain in the hard to reach areas and corners. Don’t want to use solid stain due to bad reviews, but know we need to use something to strip remaining stain so we can put a better finish on. We are in Indiana and are running out of weather time. Should we bag it and wait until spring, or we have heard some of your products can be used on damp wood. Help???

I have a rooftop deck and from what I can tell under the deck is shingle that was rolled out and flat. Can I use restore a deck stripper or will it damage the roof underneath? and Do I need to use the brightner after? I have attached a photo. Thanks.

Also can you comment, based on the picture provided, will the stripper to remove the stain or do I need the PaintStrip Paint & Solid Stain Stripping Gel? Thanks again!

Hello, I stripped off an old water-based stain and then sanded in advance of applying Armstrong-Clark’s espresso semi solid. I applied some stain to test the receptiveness of the wood. In the shadier area it is now completely dry after 3 days, but in the sunnier area it still “sweats” a bit in the afternoon (that is, a small amount comes off when I wipe it with a paper towel). What would you advise? I had assumed that the sunnier area would be dry sooner. Should I strip it again? Clean it? Brighten it? Thanks.

Thanks for that. I’m out of town at the moment, and without pics, but here is a bit more information. We’re trying to fix a job done by a painting company who applied the oil stain to the deck without checking to see what was already there. After two weeks that stain never came close to soaking in, suggesting a water-based stain had been applied by the prior owners. So, we had to use the stripper and sander to get the oil stuff off, and also to get the previous stuff off, so that we could try again with the oil stain. I used 80 grit sandpaper. It was sweating in the sun (only) much more before I stripped and sanded and now only does it slightly, which suggests to me that maybe I need to sand it a little more actually, because maybe I still haven’t gotten all the residue off. Would you agree?

I just power washed my pressure treated pine fence (15 years old). What might be the longevity after using the Restore Semi-Transparent Natural Stain. I don’t want any graying anytime soon !!! I live in St Clair Shores, is that close to you? Have a GREAT DAY !!! Carl

Hi there,
Last year I sanded our entire deck and then just sealed it with thompson’s sealer. Now I want to stain it to give it some color. Should I use the stripper or just the cleaner? I was thinking that I need the stripper to get the sealer off… Thanks

Hello, I am restoring a deck of a house we just moved in. It looks like the old owner used solid stain. I power washed the deck and it took out 90% of the stain. There are some dark spots left and I am wondering if I should use the cleaner + brightener or stripper to get rid of the rest of the dark stain spots.

I am guessing I just need to spot apply the RAD PaintStrip at areas with stains, right? Should I follow up with brightener before applying stain?

Deck was built and stained ~2014 with a Behr semi-transparent (which is absolutely garbage – peeling within 1-2 years). I re-applied around 2018 and now its time do do it again (I should have done it earlier). I’d prefer to go with a different product that would allow me to just clean it and re-apply after a few years. Can I just sand it with an orbital and then apply a solid deck stain? or do I need to strip it? One pic shows the progress after sanding (i.e. basically getting rid of any of the peeling areas but lots of non-peeling areas remain). Other pics show results after power-washing, but not sanded yet.

Our deck was painted with SW Deck Pro solid stain in 2019….they wasted their time and $ since it is awful – 6X6X16 rotted and deck is awful mess of chipped and peeling….we are removing a portion of the deck in the sun and then wanting to change all the rest of the deck under roof and the 6X6 columns from ugly orange cedar color to a grey….Will sanding the columns and then cleaning them be enough to prep it for RAD semi transparent stain or should we start with a stripper?

We had 3 layers of solid stain-glass blasted off and then used RAD. It worked perfectly. Glass is like beach sand and safe for the environment.

Sanded with industrial sander and scraped. Deck peels every year late summer when the wood shrinks. So thought a solid stain would be more flexible. Should I use a primer?

Bought a house in Oct 2020 that was a flip.  Steps to front door are wood and one coat of paint was slapped on.  It began peeling almost immediately and is about half bare wood, half peeling paint.  I’d rather stain but wondering what needs to be done to the wood first.  Thanks!

Hi, is any prep necessary before staining a brand new Douglas fir pergola? My intention was to stain the wood before we even construct it.

My son’s Eagle Project involves restoring a gazebo.  Most of it is gray, weathered wood but some railings still have a stain on them.  I do believe it is a solid stain.  We are trying to figure out the order correctly.  First, sand. Then use the cleaner and, lastly the brightener?

I just cleaned and brightened my deck with your product. Once dry, there is a white residue, almost like peach fuzz on some of the boards. Any idea as to what it is and what to do. Do I need to sand? Please advise.

I built a pressure treated wood fence last Autumn. Have waited 8 months for the treatment to dry, and am ready to stain.  Do I need a cleaner or can I simply give it a good, light power wash before staining?

Hi there,
We have about 500sq ft on our cottage deck. The deck is cedar and over 20 years old. Some boards have been replaced over the years. It has been stained several times. For the last 10 years we have been using Cabots Australian timber oil. It really deserves and needs a refresh. I am not looking for perfection but a little more continuity would be nice.
When I can across your video – it gave me hope. I absolutely love the idea of not having to wait for significant drying time! I don’t know if anything like this is sold in Canada.
However, in your opinion how would your stripper, brightener and stain refresh our deck considering its age? And is it okay to spray it off onto the grass below our deck? Finally, knowing how much would be needed of each product would be very helpful. For example, would we need do any sanding or double up on one of the products to improve it? Or would each step just have to sit longer to get the best results? I have attached a pic of a couple of parts of the deck to help with your feedback.
Thanks for answering all my questions.
Cheers,
