I bought a house built in ’96 that needs to be stained. I’m not sure if it was stained or what was used. It has a two tone appearance due to sun exposure. I’m looking for a solid stain appearance, what do I need to do to make sure it turns out the same color?
Just pressure wash for prep with our cleaner and then brightener.
I stained this deck nearly 4 years ago with another brand semi-transparent cedar tone stain. I was surprised that it appeared more solid and orange than I was expecting – particularly on the vertical beams. Reading other posts, my concern is this is too solid to now go back to semitransparent. My question is if I am able to use your products to strip/brighten this and apply semitransparent stain. Or will it have to be power sanded? What do you recommend? Many thanks
Sorry but no, this will probably not strip off.
Thx for your response. So what options do I have? What would you recommend? Just to use solid stain?
Yes, correct.
We built a Douglas fir deck two years ago. I believe we let the Wood age a few months, then sanded with a floor sander, then cleaned with deck cleaner, allowed it to dry, then used Olympic Elite Kona Brown Woodland Oil. Over the course of one year the deck started chipping and we were getting splinters, and the color became very dull. So in Spring of 2019, we repeated the process. We sanded, used deck cleaner, let it dry for a few days, then used the same woodland oil. One year later it is again dry, splintering, and is just so dull and not very good looking.
I have learned that sanding it was a bad decision because it closes the pores and doesn’t allow the oil to penetrate.
We have decided that we don’t like the color or the woodland oil at all. We want to use semi-transparent RAD, but we want to make sure it is compatible with what we have already treated the deck with and will stick. We would like to know what we should do from here to get the color lighter while still being able to see some wood grain, if possible. We want our deck to look nice and lustrous and not dry and dull. Please help so we don’t keep making novice mistakes!
You cannot apply the RAD over this so the coating will need to come off. Best to strip off as much as possible using the RAD Stripper and these additives: https://www.restore-a-deck.com/rad-stain-stripper-additives.html
Sand if needed to get the rest off. Use the RAD Brightener after.
how do I order color samples of the wood stains?
https://www.restore-a-deck.com/restore-a-deck-wood-stain/restore-a-deck-stain-samples.html
Trying to re-stain my deck, properly this time, and I need to know what stripper, wood enhancer, and stain to use. Photos are: 2 photos of deck currently, 1 photo of the deck rails I am trying to match the deck to (prefer transparent but semi would be ok), 1 photo of the stain I last used (3 years ago). Deck is 7 years old, Dallas,TX weather, and has been re-stained twice now (this will be the third)
What you have on the wood is opaque like a solid stain. You will not be able to strip this off fully and use a transparent or semi-transparent stain. You will have to power and it off or use the RAD Solid Stain to cover it.
I used semi transparent in the past though. That is what’s on it now the semi transparent it was just dark that was me trying to match the rails the last time. The rails are plastic.
What you have on your deck is not semi-transparent anymore. Too thick and is covering like a solid stain. It cannot be stripped fully.
So my only option is a solid? What do
you recommend? I have 2 big dogs that’s why it’s so scratched up in places. Is there a good top coat I can use to prevent it from scratching so quickly and the weather getting to it.
Yes on the solid stain. You can never top coat a deck stain with another product. It will peel.

I purchased a wooden swing and the slats are about 2-3″ wide. What is the best way to stain it and make sure the stain gets onto the areas between the slats?
See here for new wood tips: https://www.restore-a-deck.com/Deck-Cleaning-Reviews-and-Tips/restore-a-deck-stain-for-new-wood.html
Use the RAD Stain in Semi-Transparent.
I know about the cleaner and brightener. We used RAD on our deck but I’m not sure how to apply the stain to the swing in order to get the stain in between the slats on the inside. Would you use a sprayer and spray the entire swing then use a brush to wipe away the excess stain?
Yes, that would be the correct way to do this. Spray all and then back brush to ensure and even application and remove any drips.
Can you apply RAD over a previously stained deck that has a solid color stain on it?
The RAD Solid stain you can as long as you remove any loose or peeling stain first.
had to adjust the size of photo’s before sending…
Did my cedar deck today with RAD stripper….. I power washed it yesterday to clean it but a lot of stain remained …… I sprayed it and waited about 20-25 mins and then brushed it with a nylon deck brush… I had to keep it wet to make it easier plus preventing everything from drying …….. the deck turned dark and had a jelly on it….. Power washing was time consuming but it did the job…… no stain left behind…tomorrow I will use the brightener and decide on a stain….. Great product…easy to use….
I just finished staining my deck 2 days ago with Valspar semi transparent stain. I did a horrible job and I am not happy with it at all. what is my best course of action to remove the stain? the deck is 16×16. thank you for any help you can offer.
Post a picture.
Built my deck with cedar 4 years ago in spring. The following spring I tried to put a clear sealant on it mainly for waterproofing and ease of cleaning. I applied it when too hot and probably too much resulting in flaking almost immediately. Spring after that I power washed it and let it stand through the next winter as is. It was dirty again bad so i just pressure washed it again not as deeply though and want to cover it with something semi transparent with the same goals of waterproofing and cleanability. Do I still need to strip it or can I go right to putting a stain on it?
If all of the previous sealers is off the wood then you can go ahead and stain it now.
I am 81 years old, but in reasonably good shape. I expect that the project would take me a couple of weeks to complete. Do you recommend doing each step on the entire deck before starting the next step, or would it be better to complete all steps on a small section of the deck before moving on to the next section?
Do all of the deck before moving to next step.
Apparently the photos did not load the first time here is the deck issue. Dr. B.
So after much research I elected to utilize your product in July of last year. The deck boards were new, and they had been cured for several months. I followed your directions to a t and used your pre-stain products to prep the deck prior to staining. I knew that they would need another coat this year however I had not anticipated the awful condition they are in . So I have attached pictures of the issue. By the way I stained the boards myself and used a stain pad to get an even coat. So my question is what is the issue with the stain? I am VERY disappointed with this product.
Hello,
The pictures clearly show that when applied last year that it was over-applied and dried on top of the wood and not “in” the wood. The RAD Wood stain is a penetrating stain that soaks into the wood grain. If it soaks into the wood fully, it cannot peel. If over-applied, it can dry on top of the wood, creating issues like this. See picture of instructions.
Another potential issue that could have caused this to not fully soak in is what we call Hot Sun Application problems: https://www.restore-a-deck.com/Deck-Cleaning-Reviews-and-Tips/restore-a-deck-stain-hot-sun-application.html
BTW, there is not an issue with the stain. We sold 10,000s of gallons last year and have had less than 5-6 issues like this. All show that something went wrong in the application process and the stain was not able to fully soak in. I am sorry you had an issue and we would be more than happy to send you the products to fix this, but it is not a product defect or failure.
Thank you for your reply. The temperature was not above the suggested range….so it could not have been due to hot sun…also have an awning that was put out to avoid any type of heat issue. The areas which did not soak in were coated the same as the corresponding planks…and when the job was originally finished it looked as though it had soaked into the wood. So how do I fix this now?
The air temp is not the same as the wood tremp, so yes it can be a temperature issue of the wood. The surface temp can be 20-30 degrees higher than air temp.
Best to remove and start over. What is your sq footage for the amount of product needed?
Had much more than I needed even though I utilized your stain calculator. So do I sand it off or use the two prep products and then the stain.
Use the Stripper and then the Brightener. Do you need any of these?
I think that I will need one of each I.e., stripper and brightened.
No problem.
Had my deck stained last year, and they clearly did not put enough stain on it. The overlap sections look terrible, and the wood is not repelling water like it should. After doing some initial research, my plan is to use RAD to clean, and then use the same stain but apply myself with a more careful and thorough approach, rather than rolling it on quickly like they did. Not planning to strip the stain that’s on there since I’ll be using the same brand and color. Anything I’m missing or any other suggestions? Thanks!
You can do the steps as you suggested but the overlaps may still show through if you use the cleaner. The only way to fix this would be to strip and then brighten. The rails are fines so just the floors need to be done.
have 1200-1300 sq ft pine fence with 5-6 coats (years of recoating) behr transparent. power washed(very slow process—450 sq ft in 5 1/2 hours but down to original wood) am going to use restore a deck for remainder and thinking of using the thicking gel addition but want to know if it will work with a pump up sprayer or is it too thick please advise i dont want this project to last the rest of the year before i can enjoy
It works in a good quality pump sprayer. Post a picture of what you are trying to strip.
I have rough sawn cedar for a pergola and it is different shades. I ordered light walnut but I’m not sure that’s going to work. Should I use dark walnut instead so it is uniform in color? Thanks!
A darker color will not make it more uniform as the colors will enhance the natural tones. Either color and the difference will still be there slightly. Personally, we would use the Light Walnut for this wood.
Thank you! I appreciate your help.
Do you sell in Canada? Ontario?

Hi, my client has what looks to be Rust-Oleum restore 2x solid stain on a heavily weathered deck. It has some peeling but was well applied. She would like to strip it and use a stain that can be maintained, not stripped every few years. There is plenty of crack boards and knots. She is looking to extend the life of the deck. Strip and clean, then what stain do you recommend? I explained that some of the old color will remain in spots.
That product cannot be stripped. You would have to sand it off. Once fully sand you can clean and brighten the wood and then apply the stain. Use the Restore-A-Deck Wood Stain.
I need to restrain my deck as water repellent no longer works and stain is wearing away. I was told to use restore a deck. When applied how long does it take to remove old stain? Do you need to brush ir away or hose it away? Does the deck need to be power Washed?
See this for instructions: https://www.restore-a-deck.com/restore-a-deck-stain-stripper-instructions.html

the weather is very hit/miss right now in Ontario Canada but I really want to get the ball rolling on staining my deck. If I clean/brighten my deck 3-5 days before I stain it is this an issue?. There is also a slight chance of rain between this time.
No issues. Try to stain within 2 weeks of the prep.
Okay great thank you very much!, also how many hours upon staining before rain is an issue?
12 hours.
Do you offer a grey color?
We do not.
My deck is going on 3 years old and has not been treated because of dogs using the slider it attaches to to get outside. After using the brightener and rinsing is it ok for the dogs to be on the deck? How soon after staining can the dogs go on the deck? Pressure treated lumber
After you are done with the prep, just wait until wood is dry for letting the dogs out. After the stain is applied, wait 24 hours to be safe.

Sorry, but it is not possible to strip a solid stain fully with a deck stain stripper. It will remove some but you will need to sand to fully remove a solid color stain.

About your stains?
I have a new deck built of pressure treated pine. What can I expect for UV protection from your stains ? Am I going to see a grey deck inside of a year or two using your stains?
Do I have any hope of maintaing the nice light wood color it has now?
See this about new wood and the RAD Stains: https://www.restore-a-deck.com/Deck-Cleaning-Reviews-and-Tips/restore-a-deck-stain-for-new-wood.html
It has to be tinted for UV protection and that means your wood will be enhanced based on the color you choose.
Hi! Does this product also act like a water repellent?

How many square feet will the combo cleaner and brightner restore?
About 750-1000 sq feet per kit.
my deck is stained with cwf cedar tone. Can i use restore a deck cedar over this?
Sorry but no. You cannot apply any other deck stain brand over the CWf. You can remove the CWF down to the bare wood and then use the Restore A Deck Stains.
